About ASME
Advancing engineering excellence worldwide since 1880.
Engineering a Better Tomorrow
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers promotes the art, science & practice of multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences around the globe.
“A MAN WITH A NEW IDEA IS A CRANK UNTIL HE SUCCEEDS."
Who we are
ASME helps the global engineering community develop solutions to real-world challenges. Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, and skill development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society. ASME codes and standards, publications, conferences, continuing education, and professional development programs provide a foundation for advancing technical knowledge and creating a safer world. In 2020, ASME formed the International Society of Interdisciplinary Engineers (ISIE) II & III LLC, a new for-profit subsidiary to house business ventures that would bring new and innovative products, services, and technologies to the engineering community.
EMPOWERING ACROSS BORDERS
ASME in India
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has a significant presence in India, contributing to the engineering community through various initiatives and collaborations.
ASME India Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ASME Holdings, was established in 2012 to unite and recognize ASME members, volunteers, researchers, academic professionals, industry practitioners, and students of mechanical engineering and other allied engineering disciplines in India.

India's Engineering Sector and Global Trade
India has been a prolific trade partner with the USA in engineering goods and services exports. Engineering is the largest industrial sector in India and accounts for 3.53% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The country’s engineering sector comprises the manufacturing of iron, steel, related products, non-ferrous metals, industrial machinery, automobiles, auto components, and other engineering products.
The key goods exported under the industrial machinery category are internal combustion (IC) engines and parts, industrial machinery for dairy, food processing, textiles, industrial machinery like boilers, parts, machinery for injection molding, valves, and ATMs.
India became a permanent member of the Washington Accord (WA) in June 2014. It is now part of an exclusive group of 17 countries that are permanent signatories of the WA, an elite international agreement on engineering studies and the mobility of engineers. India’s engineering sector has witnessed remarkable growth over the last few years, driven by increased investment in infrastructure and industrial production.
ASME India's Contributions and Initiatives
ASME India focuses on advancing interdisciplinary engineering fields by facilitating the presentation and exchange of new knowledge to establish and promote safe and ethical engineering practices, future workforce development, hardware innovation for creating social impact, and sustainable development. This is achieved through the participation of some of the brightest and most passion-driven engineering talent, contributing to Standards Development, Personnel Certifications of proficiency attainment and testing, technical workshops, conferences, and publishing that foster innovation and collaboration for professional development.
ASME India also emphasizes leadership, mentorship, and skill enhancement, aligning with ASME’s global mission to improve the quality of life through innovative engineering solutions.
ASME members and volunteers in India are organised in the form of state-wise and institution-wise sections, Technical Groups and Standards Subcommittees, engage and organize themselves as empowered and recognized communities of engineering practice in several technical areas and domains of specialization. They find time out of their professional commitments to ideate, collaborate, create new knowledge, and share it with pride, being recognized and celebrating the spirit of being an engineer.
Industry Collaboration and Future Prospects
In recent years, ASME India has strengthened its presence by engaging with and helping key stakeholders in industry, regulatory boards, research institutes, and academia to explore collaborative opportunities and address and solve critical challenges in areas such as energy, sustainability, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, engineering education & workforce development.
ASME India continues to support the professional development of engineers and contribute to the greater good of the community through knowledge and experience exchange initiatives led by its Member Sections and Volunteer Groups.
